WHAT IS Coeliac Disease?

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease, caused by an immune reaction to gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, triticale and oats. This causes inflammation and damage to the small intestines, and also affects food absorption. Common symptoms include weight loss, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, anaemia, flactulence (passing wind), weakness, and fatigue.

An accurate medical diagnosis of coeliac disease is determined by a Gastroenterologist by performing a gastroscopy with a small bowel biopsy.
